NRG® Block Insulated Concrete Masonry Units

NRG Insulated Block, One of the most energy efficient units on the market

NRG Insulated Block is an energy efficient concrete masonry unit that on average delivers HVAC savings of over 60%, compared to standard masonry building materials. NRG may also contribute to your projects’ LEED points over several categories.

NRG block contains a continuous insulated thermal barrier, which effectively creates high insulated thermal mass, high heat capacity, and a long thermal lag time. These attributes combine to create interior walls that require less energy than is normally needed to keep the interior cool in the summer, and warm in the winter. Consequently, smaller capacity HVAC systems may be used, resulting in significant upfront construction cost savings.

The NRG insulated masonry unit increases your project's thermal mass.

NRG Block is a structural block that uses an expanded polystyrene insulation, installed at the plant, which forms a continuous thermal barrier, inclusive of the mortar joints, between the exterior and interior environments. The inserts are non-toxic and contain no formaldehyde.

There are no "web" connections, therefore, no energy breaks between the exterior wall veneer and the interior core. This unique thermal mass design reduces air temperature fluctuations while exceeding the strength of masonry construction.
NRG Block, like all masonry material, has high Thermal Mass and Heat Capacity, as well as Thermal Lag – all of which allow specification of smaller and less expensive heating and cooling units. Annual fire insurance premiums may be also lower by as much as 60% with masonry construction.

For a normal weight block (125/ft3), the equivalent R-Value is 20 and 22 respectively, for 10" and 12" blocks. . A NRG Block is six to ten times higher in R-Value than a common block, which ranges from 1.5 to 2.5 depending upon the aggregates used. Other block using inserts or hollow core block with poured insulation range between R-4 and R-6 for a 10” block and between R-6 and R-8 for a 12” block, depending on the density.  NRG block can deliver up to a performance equivalent of an R-22.

Acoustically Sound

The NRG 12” block has a Sound Transmission Class (STC) of 55 and the 10" block has a STC of 53 based on direct interpolation. These results are better than the leading sound absorbing masonry design sold in today’s market. The NRG Block is the only block that has a solid facade, yet still will provide a superior noise barrier. to any other block on the market.

Good Looks

NRG block is available in the many colors and architectural finishes including Trendstone, Trendstone Plus, Verastone, Mesastone and Split face block along with standard gray block.

Recycled Materials

NRG inserts contain up to 30% recycled material. In addition, the manufactured block (aggregates) may also contain recycled material. Contact Masonry Resource Company regarding your particular project.

Cost Effective

NRG’s superior design allows for a cost-effective way to build with single wythe construction, yet double wythe benefits.

Northfield Block is the licensed manufacturer of NRG Block throughout the Midwest. Contact Masonry Resources Company for more information.
